Cleaning’s a hard job, there’s no question. It requires discipline, a sense of urgency, an eye for detail and — if you want to do it fast — a lot of hard-earned skills. (Anyone who calls it “unskilled labour” has never had to earn a living from it!)
But it ain’t rocket surgery. There’s nothing conceptually tricky about commercial cleaning.
A site’s dirty, you clean it. Simple.
The truth is, the individual cleaners are rarely the problem. It’s how they’re managed that’s usually the problem.
Poor planning, poor training, poor communication, poor systems, poor pay, poor treatment… These are the things that usually lead to poor cleaning. Sure, a lazy cleaner will never do a good job, but even an average cleaner can do a great job if you get all of these bits right.
Think about any job you’ve ever had.
You always did it better when you were happy, right? When you were fairly paid and properly trained. When you received clear instructions and knew exactly what was expected of you. When the tools and systems you used, day to day, worked for you, not against you. When you were given the time you needed to do things right. And perhaps most importantly of all, when you felt valued and respected.
Cleaners are no different. They want the same things every other employee wants.
Trouble is, most commercial cleaning companies just don’t give it to them. Not to put too fine a point on it, but they treat their cleaners like dirt. (You should hear some of the horror stories our cleaners tell us about their past employers. It’s shameful!)
It’s a different story here. We employ more than 100 cleaners, and some of them have been with us for years, which is extremely rare in the industry.

Metro Building Strata Committee
Since founding Matthews Cleaning Co. in 2018, Jordan has grown to one of the largest commercial cleaning companies in NSW.
Our Managing Director, Jordan Matthews, actually started out as a cleaner, at just 17. He worked for a couple of other companies first, but started his own company because of the very problems discussed above.
He didn’t want to be treated like that, and he saw, first-hand, what a difference it made to the quality of the job his colleagues did.
So after a year of that, he decided to go out on his own and do things properly.
We go to great lengths to make sure our cleaners are happy and treated well, which means they do a much better job for our clients.
We know how long things actually take and how hard they actually are. We don’t underestimate the difficulty — or the unpleasantness — of the job. And our whole business is built around smoothing out those rough spots for our cleaners.
We pay fairly. We factor in enough time when we quote. We provide the right tools and equipment. We plan our roster intelligently, so no-one’s given too many — or too few — hours. We have systems that streamline communication and make it clear exactly what’s expected on every job. We provide fair feedback on quality, and we take feedback onboard, even if it’s not what we want to hear.
Above all, we treat our cleaners like people. You wouldn’t think that’s such a rare thing, but it really is.
It sounds counterintuitive, but commercial cleaning isn’t all about cleaning. Especially for bigger organisations.
When you have a lot of areas that need cleaning, but a limited budget (and let’s face it, everyone has a limited budget), the trick to a successful outcome is determining where to allocate resources. Which areas are directly linked to revenue, or to customer satisfaction, staff wellbeing or hygiene? Those are the areas that should receive most of the attention (or, more specifically, a commensurate proportion of budget).
If you’ve been unable to find a commercial cleaner that even does the basics well, you may not be thinking on this level yet, but with the basics covered, this will definitely be your next step.
This is where Jordan (our Managing Director) spends most of his client time. He sees his role as an operations partner, not a service provider. It’s his job to figure out how best to allocate your budget and resources to best align with your business strategy.
Many of our clients have been with us for years. And overwhelmingly, they have lovely things to say about us…
See for yourself what a difference we can make. Hit us up to see how much better your cleaning could be. We’re confident you’ll be giving us a glowing testimonial too.
